Remediating Mold Damage
Daytona Beach residents deal with the effects of the sun year-round. The nearly constant heat is attractive for many people, even taking hurricane season into account. The sunshine, however, does not prevent mold from expanding and growing in every home in our community.
SERVPRO restoration teams follow four key steps to stop and eliminate mold damage in Daytona Beach. First, they establish containment, then remove mold contamination, clean out settled spores, and dry affected materials.
Unless the mold has grown through the entire home, technicians establish containment to isolate the mold colony and prevent accidental contamination to mold-free areas of the home. They begin with sealing the vents of the HVAC system to prevent mold spread and then cover all entrances and exits with plastic sheeting.
SERVPRO technicians then remove the mold. For non-porous surfaces like glass and marble, they wipe them down using dry sponges or cloths. If the mold is very thick or sticky, team members employ an anti-fungal cleaner to break up the layers for easier removal.
Mold can grow into porous surfaces, so they may need to be removed from the home completely to clean or dispose of them. Upholstered furniture can require extensive work with scrub brushes and anti-fungal cleaners to neutralize and remove mold spores trapped in the fabric. If the spores penetrated through the entire chair or sofa, it might take an immersion tank to completely soak the item to restore it to its original, clean state.
There are also semi-porous materials like wood and concrete that may require sanding or use a wire brush to remove mold spores completely. If a wood support structure has mold on its surface for an extended period, technicians would examine it for structural integrity.
Once technicians complete cleaning efforts, they wait for spores released into the air to settle. They wipe down all surfaces and use vacuum cleaners with specially designed HEPA filters to capture remaining spores off walls and tables, and draw them out of carpets. They repeat the process until an air content meter tests at normal levels for inert mold.
After completing all procedures, team members remove the containment and dry materials in the affected area to prevent new growth. They use dehumidifiers to draw moisture from the surrounding air and a combination of air movers and fans to force warm air across damp surfaces and draw the cooler air from the now clean area of the home.
