Remediating Water Damage in Daytona

SERVPRO Uses Many Technologies for Water and Moisture Removal
Daytona homes were spared the worst of the weather this year, but that does not eliminate flooding. Even in a year like 2017, most of the damage to Florida homes came from more everyday sources such as a leaking pipe or a failed dishwasher or other appliance.
As we all know by now, water damage in Daytona homes can be severe unless a homeowner moves quickly to have excess water removed and her property swiftly dried. SERVPRO offices know that regardless of the source of water, a home in distress is at risk for further damage and some actions have to be immediately taken after we arrive.
First, we secure your home. Every action here is to prevent further loss and includes much more than boarding up windows and doors. Our technicians determine the source of the leak and either block or turn off the water into the home. We also check for weakened or collapsing floors and any electrical hazards that might be present. Even in a large home, this usually takes only an afternoon.
Once we identify the problems, we remove any water in the home. For amounts over two inches in depth, we use commercial grade pumps. For smaller levels, we bring in extraction wands that function as an industrial grade water-vac. After we remove the visible water, one of our inspectors examines behind walls, under floors, and in carpets for any trapped moisture.
Our next step is to remove that moisture. Technicians use the same extraction wands to draw water from carpets and between floorboards after we adjust the devices to a lower setting to prevent any secondary damage. If there is a pad under the carpet, we remove and dispose of it.
Now that it is dry, we examine the carpet for damage. Our concerns are for damaged seams, delamination or separation of the back of the carpet, and mold. If we have removed the water quickly enough, the damage is usually very minor. In most cases, SERVPRO IICRC certified restoration specialists could repair the carpets, lay them on a new pad, and then stretch them back into place. If we find mold, our normal recommendation is to replace the carpet.
Our final action is to dry the rest of the home. By removing the water earlier, we prevented the immediate loss of building material, but it is still necessary to drywall panels and floor trim to stop both mold and wood rot. We use dehumidifiers to draw moisture from the air and air movers to direct warm, dry air across surfaces to force out moisture without causing any further damage.
